Rrriiiiinnnngggg! Rrriiiiinnnngggg!
Somewhere a young man’s alarm clock goes off. He looks at the time, hops out of bed, and hurriedly gets ready for work.
On the drive in he runs in to heavy traffic. “Oh no! I cant be late on the first day!” he yells at the top of his lungs. He nervously looks at the clock as his car creeps slowly along. He finally arrives at his destination just in the nick of time.
He rushes through the revolving doors of his giant office building and takes the stairs because the elevator takes far too long. As he runs in the office out of breath, his Boss seems concerned, “Why are you breathing so hard son? We haven’t even started working?”
“Well sir, it’s my first day and I didn’t want to make a bad impression and show up late”, he stammers back to his Boss.
The Boss smiles, “Son you made a great first impression when I interviewed you that’s why I gave you the job. Now take a deep breath and settle down.”
As the young man walked to his cubicle all he could think about was how he could make up for the bad start. So he immediately got to work. He filed papers, went over numbers, called clients, made appointments and ended up finishing all of his work. This was all before lunch! Upon returning from lunch he ran into the Boss again.
“Hey sir! I completed all the work you had for me today is there anything else I can do?” the young man asks filled with pride.
The Boss replies, “Son that work you finished was meant to be done over the course of the week. Not in a couple of hours.”
“But aren’t you proud of me? I worked so hard and went above and beyond what was asked.”
“Yes you did but I didn’t ask you to do that.”
“But…bu…but I just assumed the more work I completed, the faster I would gain your approval.”
The Boss’ voice grew serious, “Son there is no amount of work you can do to earn my approval!”
“What then h..h…h…how”
“Stop it!” The Boss exclaims! “You don’t have to gain my approval. You had my approval the second I hired you. Don’t you get it!”
“No”
And neither will we. There are Christians all over the world trying to earn God’s approval. Trying to earn something they already have. You see, the second Jesus died on the cross for our sins we were approved! All we have to do is confess with our mouth and believe in our heart that Jesus is Lord. The second we do that we don’t have to work any more. God’s approval is something that can’t be earned by works but was given by grace alone. The minute you accept Jesus as your Savior the Boss says “You’re hired.”
“For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith–and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God–” Ephesians 2:8
