DREAMERS
The Dragon draws closer, you can now feel his fiery breath. In moments like these you should be terrified, but there’s no time for fear. For right now you are the only thing standing between the Dragon and a beautiful princess. The same princess you have secretly loved since you were a boy.
No, there’s no time for fear. This is your big shot. Your chance to be the hero. Your chance to be her Prince Charming and ride off into the sunset. So for now fear can wait.
This Dragon is no match for your sword and you anxiously wait to use it. Closer, closer, he’s almost in range. Just a few more steps and………..BOOM! Your sword strikes against his chest. Blood begins to flow but the Dragon keeps coming. BOOM! You strike again! Another solid connection as the Dragon slows to a stop. One more hit could do it…. BOOM! The fatal blow! His knees buckle as the Dragon crumbles to the ground.
You’re the hero! The princess is saved. A crowd swarms in envy of your courage and bravery. Then finally the princess whom you love approaches. She leans in for a kiss. Her soft, moist lips inch closer and closer to yours. This is the moment you’ve been waiting for and then…….
You wake up.
It was all just a dream.
You’re still in you’re bed, neatly tucked in with just minutes to sleep before work.
Life isn’t bad. You have a good job. You make good money. You have fun friends. From the outside everything is perfect. Yet you long for more.
You see, everyone always told you that this is what you are supposed to do. Go to college. Get your degree. Find a job. Move to the city. Get married and have kids. Thats the American Dream right?
Wrong.
That’s the dream the world wants you to have.
Its the dream that’s full of safety and financial stability. It’s the dream that is free of the unknown. The one where every risk is calculated and every move is planned.
But that’s not a dream.
No a dream isn’t a fancy car, and a pretty wife. A dream is much more than that.
A dream is something you chase. Something you have to fight for with all your might, all the while knowing you may never catch it.
Dreams are dangerous. Dreams involve risk. They sacrifice your comfort and compromise your future.
Sounds scary right?
Of course!
But what are you really afraid of?
Are you scared of the journey? The adventure? The unknown?
No way! You long for that. You’re so bored working your nine to five that any sort of break from the norm has you foaming at the mouth.
What you really fear is failure.
You fear giving up what you have in order to chase everything you ever wanted and coming up short.
It’s a scary thought but it’s true. That’s what life’s about. It’s not about sitting back at your desk and waiting for your dreams to show up. It’s about waking up in the morning and slaying that Dragon. It’s about rescuing your princess, throwing her on the back of your horse and riding off into the sunset for your happily ever after.
Fairy tales aren’t just for children. They aren’t something meant to remain in the make-believe. Fairy tales can come to life if you let them. But it requires child-like faith. It requires risking heartbreak. It requires facing the thing you are most afraid of….that nasty F word……failure.
That F word can keep you tucked in the sheets of your fancy house. It can keep you driving your fancy car. It can keep you comfortable with mediocrity. But there is one thing it can’t do.
It can’t bring you alive.
And that’s what this world needs. It doesn’t need more office clerks. It doesn’t need more lawyers. It doesn’t need more tax brokers. The world needs more people to come alive! It needs more dreamers! It needs a generation who is not paralyzed by the fear of failure, but instead is willing to chase their dreams, chase their passions, and chase their freedom no matter the cost.
So come alive! Find what it is that gets your blood boiling! Find what it is that raises your heart rate! Don’t go looking for the thing that your parents, teachers, or society said you should want. Find what it is that YOU want. Find YOUR dream.
This may take some serious soul searching. Some of us threw our dreams away far too long ago. Maybe it was as a child because a bully said your dream was stupid. Maybe it was as a college student because a parent told you there was no money in that career path. Whatever the reason, whatever the why, wherever you lost it, go find it. Backtrack as long as you have to, but whatever you do, FIND IT.
FIND YOUR DREAM.
Every now and then you read something that changes the course of your life. When I was a junior in high school I read a poem that did just that. It challenged me to do exactly what I’m doing now. It challenged me to find my own dreams. It challenged me to risk it all in search of LIFE. Maybe it will do the same for you.
GEORGE GRAY
By: Edgar Lee Masters
I have studied many times
The marble that was chiseled for me —
A boat with a furled sail at rest in a harbor.
In truth it pictures not my destination
But my life.
For love was offered me and I shrank from its disillusionment;
Sorrow knocked at my door, but I was afraid;
Ambition called to me, but I dreaded the chances.
Yet all the while I hungered for meaning in my life.
And now I know that we must lift the sail
And catch the winds of destiny
Wherever they drive the boat.
To put meaning in one’s life may end in madness,
But life without meaning is torture
Of restlessness and vague desire–
It is a boat longing for the sea and yet afraid.
So get out of bed. Lift the sails of your life and catch your destiny. This is no time to play it safe. Stop looking for reasons not to do it and just GO FOR IT.
Sooner or later that hat big nasty F word will turn form failure to FAITH.
